Quinninup Market Day

Sunday 11th October

The Annual Quinninup Market Day was begun in 2001 to promote Quinninup in a more favourable light following bad publicity in the local and State press.  It has evolved over the years to become an annual event on the local calendar and looked forward to by many of the children in the area.

Over the years we have endeavoured to focus on providing free activities for children of the district as the Market Day is always in the 3rd Term holidays.  There are a lot of local and visiting children in the area at this time and to provide something for them that is of no or little cost to parents and grand parents is our aim.

The money we raise goes towards the upkeep and maintenance of the buildings in our charge and of the walktrails in the area.  The organisation and promotion of this event involves numerous volunteers not only on the day but prior to the event itself in the provision and distribution of advertising leaflets.  The day itself, always the 2nd Sunday of the school holidays, requires at least 20 volunteers to man the take away food outlets and stall holder locations.

The name of the market day changes from year to year depending upon who we get to fund us with a grant.  It is only by applying for grant money each time that we are able to supply the free activities for the children.  The cost can vary but it is usually within the $3,000 range.  We have been very fortunate with our applications with LotteryWest and Healthways who are two of our most generous donors.  The local businesses in Manjimup, such as Coles,  Woolworths and The Cherry Box, are happy to donate produce for our use in our food stalls where we make the most profit on the day. We have also had donations from Mt Barker Chickens, Bannister Downs Dairy and there is of course our local volunteers, who give unstintingly of their time to the QCA.
